VLC and Zoom Video Player: Video Zoom on Mac

Both players offer ways to enlarge video

VLC is a free, open-source player for macOS and other platforms. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 documentation describes preset video zoom sizes and snapshot capture. Its interface and effects can differ by platform and version; this comparison does not claim VLC lacks other zoom tools.

A workflow centered on trackpad zoom

Zoom Video Player is a Mac app focused on pinch-to-zoom and pan during playback. Its zoom limit follows source resolution, with Actual Size for a one-to-one pixel view and Option-drag to focus on a rectangle.

For comparing footage, Zoom Video Player supports up to nine windows with synchronized playback and zoom, frame stepping, and PNG frame export.

Which should you choose?

Try VLC if you want a free player across several operating systems. Consider Zoom Video Player if your priority is gesture-based inspection on a Mac and synchronized clip comparison. Test the actual recordings and controls you need. There is no universal winner or claim here about relative performance, format coverage or image quality.

Price and limits

VLC is free and open source. Zoom Video Player has a free download and 14-day premium trial; afterwards zoom is limited to 150% without ProUnlock. The App Store shows the current purchase terms for your region.
